Daphne from Greek mythology was a Naiad, a female nymph, associated with bodies of freshwater such as streams, brooks and fountains. Her beauty attracted the attention of the god Apollo who pursued her. Daphne, unhappy with the pursuit, just before being overtaken, pleaded to her father for help. He, the rivergod Ladon, transformed Daphne into a laurel tree so she could avoid Apollo.
